Do Treehouses Increase or Decrease the Value of a Home?

building the treehouse may increase or decrease the value of a property based on the following criteria:

  1. Is it safe? A safe treehouse is an asset and adds value, but an unsafe treehouse is considered a liability.
  2. Is it attractive, or an attractive nuisance? Does it look properly built or was it cheaply thrown together? Unfortunately, it sounds like making a fancier looking house might be beyond your skill level and require the assistance of a carpenter.
  3. Some will love the treehouse, others will wish it wasn't there. In that sense, as a seller, having a treehouse is kind of like having a swimming pool.
  4. Is it damaging the tree? Building a treehouse can hurt the tree, depending on how you do it. Some trees are worth a lot of money, and if you damage or kill a valuable tree, then you may decrease the value of your property by thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.
